‘Build up strong resistance against rape, repression on women’
Leaders of two left-leaning women’s organisations today called upon the countrymen to forge a mass movement for building strong resistance against the rampant incidents of rape and repression on women.
Samajtantrik Mohila Forum and women cell of Communist Party of Bangladesh jointly came up with the call after forming a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka city this morning.
They staged the demonstration demanding exemplary punishment to the people who raped and murdered Shahinoor Akhter Tania, a nurse of Ibn Sina Hospital’s Kalyanpur branch in the capital.
The women leaders equivocally urged the authorities concerned to ensure security for women in public transports.
HOW DID TANIA DIE?
On May 6, Tania died in mysterious circumstances in a passenger bus on her way home in Kishoreganj’s Katiadi upazila.
Two days later, the district’s civil surgeon said that the autopsy of Tania found evidence that she was gang-raped and murdered.
Her nose, neck, legs and hands bore injury marks which suggested that she had a scuffle.
The back of her head was also fractured, said Civil Surgeon Md Habibur Rahman, quoting a three-member team of doctors who performed the autopsy.
Police on Tuesday arrested five people, including the bus driver Md Nuruzzaman, 39, and his helper Lalon Mia, 33, for their alleged involvement in the incident.
