Children in RMCH get sicker after being pushed injections

At least 14 children became sicker at the paediatrics ward of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital last night after being given injections and a huge number of policemen had to be deployed to control the angry parents and relatives of the children.

Police and doctors at the hospital, however, claimed the situation was brought to normal as of filing this report at 1:00am when the sources said the condition of the children improved.

The children, between two and eight, became sicker and their temperature spiked after they were given antibiotic injections, Prof Md Nowshad Ali, head of the paediatrics surgery department, said.

Ampules of the government supplied injections were taken to Paediatrics Ward-10 in the morning and administered at night, he said.

“We suspect the unusual heat wave might have affected the medicines,” the chief of RMCH paediatrics surgeons told The Daily Star.

He said they seized the ampules and would send those to Essential Drugs Company Ltd for examination.

As the temperature of the children rose simultaneously after administering the injections, parents and relatives of the children got infuriated.

For maintaining law and order, a huge number of police were mobilised at the hospital at 10:30pm, witnesses and police said.

Hafizur Rahman, OC of Rajpara police station said, no untoward incident occurred.
