Jubo League man stabbed to death
A Jubo League activist was stabbed to death by a group of unidentified assailants near Mrittunjoy School in Mymensingh town early yesterday.
The dead, Rezaul Karim Russel, 34, was a member of Mymensingh district unit Jubo League and a former vice president of the district’s Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
Md Mahmudul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station, said Russel, of Char Horipur village in Mymensingh’s Sadar upazila, was indiscriminately stabbed around 2:20am and died on the spot.
On information, police rescued the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College morgue for autopsy, he added.
Police primarily suspected that Russel was murdered over factional feud among the ruling party men. The law enforcers started conducting drives to arrest the killers.
No case was filed in this connection till last night.
The victim’s elder sister Jesmin Akter Poly said Russel went out of her Aamlapara home in the town after Monday’s iftar and did not return.
“Around 2:30am, we were informed that Russel has been killed,” Jesmin added.
She also alleged that Russel had a long standing feud with a former president of Mymensingh city unit BCL and the former BCL president might have involvement in the murder.
The victim’s elder brother Anwar Hossain Limon said he was “sure” that Russel was killed over the feud as the former Mymensingh BCL president’s followers previously attacked Russel and threatened him with death.
Nibash Chandra Majhi, deputy inspector general of police (Mymensingh Range), said he had directed the law enforcers to take immediate actions and bring the culprits to book.
Condemning the murder and demanding immediate arrest, advocate Md Azharul Islam, president of Mymensingh district unit Jubo League, said the “politics of killing” must stop.
