Evan stuns Fahad
Yasir Ali Khan Evan became unbeaten champion in the Walton 39th National Junior (Under-20) Chess Championships after beating holder FM Fahad Rahman in the eighth and final round at the Chess Federation hall room yesterday.
Yasir, Fahad and Swarnavo Chowdhury secured 6.5 points each from eight rounds, but Yasir was declared champion in tie-breaking system, leading Swarnavo to runner-up position and Fahad to a third-place finish.
Fahad needed a draw to ensure his fifth title, but the FIDE Master could not play his natural game due to fever. Yasir was offered a draw by Fahad, but Yasir denied and then beat Fahad to become the champion for the first time.
"I can't still believe that I beat Fahad. In last two editions, I could not play well but this time I was determined to perform well and win all matches. I did not expect to become champion but I finally did," said Yasir, who dreams of becoming Grandmaster in future.
In the girls' section, WCM Noshin Anjum clinched hattrick title by beating Nusrat Jahan Alo. Anjum secured maximum eight points from eight matches while Walijah Ahmed became runner-up with seven points.
Noshin is supposed to take part in Asian Junior Chess Championships in Indonesia from June 30 but the ninth-grader is in doubt about taking part in the championships.
"I don't know if I can take part in Asian Junior Chess as my parents don't have the ability to send me to Indonesia. If anyone sponsors me, I will be able to participate."
