Road crashes kill 25,526 in last 10yrs: Quader
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today informed parliament that around 25,526 people were killed and 19,763 others were injured in road accidents in the last 10 years since 2009.
The minister came up with the statistics while responding to a question from BNP MP Harunur Rashid from Chapainawabganj-3.
Quader, however, said his ministry is not the concerned body to keep a record over how many cases were filed relating the road accidents.
In a scripted answer, Quader said, on an average, some 2,500 people were killed every year in road accidents.
In reply to a separate question from Harunur Rashid, Quader said Police, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Accident Research Institute of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) are keeping a record on road accidents and casualties in the prescribed forms.
The minister said the road accidents usually take place due to lack of awareness of the road users including pedestrians.
Lack of skills of drivers, tendency to violate the law, lack of proper enforcement of laws, technical glitches, over-speed, overtaking and overload of vehicles are also among the main causes behind the road accidents, the minister also said.
