2 killed in Gazipur train-truck collision
At least two people were killed and two others injured as Dhaka bound Maitree express train from Kolkata crashed into a sand-laden truck on an unattended level crossing in Gazipur early today.
The deceased are presumably the truck driver and his assistant. Their identity could not be confirmed immediately, Rafiqul Islam, sub-inspector (SI) of Tongi Railway Police outpost, told our Gazipur correspondent.
The Maitree express was heading towards Dhaka from Joydebpur Station at 4:00am when a sand-laden truck broke down on the Abdul Majid road level crossing in Dakkhinkhan area, the SI said.
The train hit and smashed the truck killing one person on the spot. One other died on the way to hospital, the police official added.
The injured, who were riding on the loaded truck, are admitted in Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Although the level crossing has a post permitted for gateman, most of the times it stays empty, our correspondent reports quoting police and locals.
