AL leader hacked to death in Bandarban

An Awami League leader was hacked to death in Bandarban’s Lama upazila last night, just around 34 hours into the murder of another AL leader in the district.

The dead, Md Alamgir Shikdar, 45, was the joint secretary of Sarai union AL in the upazila, said party sources.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lama Police Station Oppela Raju Naha said Alamgir was returning home from his farmhouse around 10:30pm on his motorbike when unidentified people hit the back of his neck with a sharp weapon.

Md Dastagir Shikdar, the victim’s brother, said his brother may have been killed due to political feud.

Police have already arrested one Md Ali in this connection, the OC.

“During interrogation, Md Ali claimed that he was from an indigenous community and that he had converted to Islam,” the OC said.

Alamgir’s body was sent to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Earlier on Monday, Mong Mong Thoai Marma, 50, president of Rowangchhari upazila’s Taracha union AL, was shot dead in broad daylight on the Bandarban-Rowangchhari road.

In May, vice president of Bandarban town AL and another AL activist were hacked to death in the district.
