DUET

“Keep Calm and Avoid Everything”

Platform: Android, iOS
Size: 49.6 MB

In Duet you have a ring with two dots on opposite sides: one red and one blue, and you have to rotate the ring, clockwise or counter-clockwise, by holding the screen (the ring stops rotating when you let go). The game stops if an oncoming obstacle manages to hit either dot - the whitish-grey obstacles get splashed with colour, as the dot explodes. This way you'll know where you went wrong and can avoid the same mistake next time.

The controls may sound like child's play, but the gameplay isn't - there's barely a break between the obstacles and they often start twisting, spinning and speeding up without warning. It's extremely challenging; it gets your heart racing and requires your concentration and reflexes to be on point, and excellent hand-eye coordination is crucial, but oddly enough the graphics, animation and soundtrack are extremely relaxing. Use headphones to enjoy the full soothing effect of this eerily pleasing soundtrack by composer Tim Shiel - one of the highlights of the game. The ads, while present, are very rare and the background of geometric shapes is rather admirable.

Duet contains around 50 story mode stages, slightly based on the stages of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining ,etc.). The obstacles' behaviour and difficulty vary with each stage and when you're past the story mode, another set of levels (considerably different from the first) is available, but sadly only in the premium, ad-free version which needs to be purchased. This is probably the only letdown in this captivating game of minimalist nature. Try it and sign in using your Google account - it would be thoroughly frustrating if you were to lose your progress.
