UNCAT happy on anti-torture report of Bangladesh: Law Minister
Law Minister Anisul Huq today claimed that the United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) has become satisfied at the anti-torture report of Bangladesh.
“I have placed the report describing the present situation and reality and the condition of rule of law in Bangladesh before them [review committee of the UCCAT in Geneva, capital of Switzerland]. We have seen that they have become satisfied,” he said.
The law minister said this while talking to reporters after attending as chief guest to the inauguration of a training programme on the children act at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka.
Earlier on August 4, BNP leader Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon told the media that the real situation of Bangladesh does no corroborate the recent statement placed by Law Minister Anisul Huq at the review meeting of the UNCAT in Geneva.
Today, Minister Anisul Huq said the present government has ensured the trial of many important cases including the crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the country’s Liberation war in 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman murder case, jail killing case, 10-truck arms haul case and August 21 grenade attack case.
“In this situation, I have said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led government has taken all necessary steps to establish rule of law in Bangladesh. Have I told any lie? You judge it,” he said.
Earlier in the day, the law minister told the inauguration meeting that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had established the base of child-protection though formulating and enforcing the children act in 1974.
Then, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led government has ensured the rights of the children in phases, the law minister added.
