Bangladesh discusses export of electricity to India

Bangladesh and India at the 17th Joint Steering Committee today discussed on the prospect of exporting electricity from Bangladesh to India in the future.

The two countries also discussed on the policies regarding cooperation between the two countries on power and energy.

“The meeting discussed prospect of exporting electricity to India and also on relieving Bangladesh of import duties in case of any complication arising from political reasons or amendments to laws in India,” said a press release of Bangladesh Power development Board undersigned by its Director (public Relations) Saiful Hasan Chowdhury.

Senior Secretary of the Bangladesh Power Division Dr Ahmad Kawkaus and India’s Secretary of Power Subhash Chandra Garg while talking to media at Intercontinental Hotel said both the countries discussed about policies on the matter but not about anything specific.

Bangladesh currently produces 18,961 megawatt of electricity and there is a demand for 8,500 to 12,500 megawatts of electricity therefore there is a scope to export, according to sources at the power ministry.
