Suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission Khandaker Enamul Basir today submitted a petition to the High Court, seeking bail in a case filed over the transaction of Tk 40 lakh as bribe.

He submitted the petition through his lawyer Jamal Hossain claiming that he is innocent and he has become a victim of circumstance.

Advocate Jamal told The Daily Star that the HC may hold hearing on the bail petition Tuesday.

Meanwhile, ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told this correspondent that he will oppose the bail petition of Enamul Basir when it will be heard by the HC.

On July 16, ACC Director Fanafillah filed the case with the ACC’s Dha-ka District Coordination Office-1 under the anti-money laundering act on charge of taking Tk 40 lakh in bribes from suspended deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman.

Following a TV news report, in which Mizan alleged that Basir took the bribe from him for clearing him of a corruption allegation, the ACC formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Fanafilya and suspended Basir.

In May last year, the ACC launched an enquiry into the wealth of Mizan of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The ACC had tasked Basir with the enquiry.

On July 1, the HC handed suspended DIG Mizan to the police after he appeared before it and sought bail in the corruption case and also asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to produce him before the court within 24 hours.

On June 24, the ACC filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and nephew Mahmudul Hasan, a sub-inspector of police, on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
