39 to vie for each seat in DU admission test

At least 39 admission seekers will compete for each seat in the first year admission test under 2019-2020 academic session of Dhaka University.

A total of 276,522 admission seekers have registered against 7,118 seats of four units of the admission tests, a DU press release said today.

However, a total of 272,512 aspirants applied for 7,128 seats last year, where 38 competitors competed for each seat.

This year, among the 276,522 applicants 88,976 will vie for 1,795 seats in Ka-unit while 45,013 for 2,378 seats in Kha-unit, 29,056 for 1,250 seats in Ga-unit, 97,479 for 1,560 seats in Gha-unit and 15,998 for 135 seats in Cha-unit, the press release reads.

The deadline for online applications, which started on August 5, ended on August 27.

Calculators, mobile phones and any kind of mobile communication devices are prohibited in the exam hall and mobile court would be on duty during the examinations.

The admission test is going to start from September 13 with “Ga” unit exam under Business Studies faculty.

The admission test for “Ka” unit will take place on September 20; “Kha” unit on September 21; “Ga” unit on September 13; and “Gha” unit on September 27.

Exams for “Cha” unit under Faculty of Fine Arts will be held in two parts -- general knowledge on September 14 and drawing on September 28, the release reads.

This year, the admission tests will have 75 marks for multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and 45 marks for a written exam. The MCQ section will be of 50 minutes while the written part will be 40 minutes, according to a press release of the university.

The decision was made at a meeting of DU’s committee on admissions into honours programmes held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building July 24, said the press release.

The applicants will get 50 minutes to answer 60 MCQ questions, and 40 minutes for the written test. Each of the MCQ questions will contain 1.25 marks.

The pass mark is set to 30 for the MCQ portion.

The aspirant’s written paper will not be evaluated if he or she fails to obtain pass marks in MCQ.

One has to score 12 or more to pass the written part. If a candidate gets less than 12 marks, but passes the MCQ part, he or she will still be considered ineligible for admission.

No questions related to general knowledge will be set in the written test.

The fee of registration had been set at Tk450 for this year. It was Tk350 in last few years.
