Bicycle rental company Jobike is going to roll out its service on a pilot basis in Dhaka University from Monday, after its successful journey in some other public universities and some selective areas of the country.

“We are at the last stage of our planning and set to start the service from next Monday,” Mehedi Reza, founder and chief executive of Jobike, told The Daily Star.

The service will only run inside the campus and students, teachers and university staffs will be able to obtain the service, said Reza, also a former product operations manager at Alibaba Group, the world's largest online trading company.

Bicycle users will have to go through a registration process for obtaining users’ registration number. Jobike team will help interested people with the registration process.

Bicycles were already shifted to the campus and with the help of Dhaka University authorities and Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) the commercial service will be launched on completion of the piloting.

For Dhaka University, Jobike authorities are planning to bring down the charge from the existing charge of Tk 3 for five minutes, he said.

The service was first launched in Cox's Bazar in January 2018, with a plan to transform the two-wheelers as one of the main modes of transport in the congested city.

The service is now also available at Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust).

In January this year, they also launched it in Mirpur DOHS area of Dhaka.
