Buet VC fails to tame agitating students

Buet Vice-Chancellor Prof Saiful Islam has failed to calm the agitated students as he did not give any specific decision to meet their eight-point demand including expulsion of the killers of Abrar Fahad.

Amid protest, the VC, however, extended his moral support to the demands of the agitated students.

“I am, in principle, supporting your (students) demands and assuring you that I will meet your demands,” the Buet VC said this while trying to calm the agitated students who besieged him in front of his office this evening.

In the face of indiscriminate questions from the agitated students, the VC, without responding to any question, said he had to talk to several high ups in the government to find the solution to the crisis.

Responding a question from students, the VC endorsed his limitation saying that, “I can’t do anything out of the government decision. We have formed an investigation committee which is now working,” he added.

“It is a murder case and we all will have to take patient. I will try to meet your demands,” the VC was trying to manage the agitated students by giving the assurance.

At one stage, the VC, on request, came out of the office and tried to calm his students but his efforts went in vain as he did not give any specific decision ensure the justice for Abrar.

Then the VC again return to his office keeping the agitated students outside of the office.

The agitating students, who were demonstrating for the second consecutive day, threatened to stay there keeping the VC inside his office until they do not get the specific assurance to meet their demands.

Other demands include the highest punishment to the killers of Abrar, holding trial under the Speedy Trial Tribunal and bearing expenditure for conducting the legal procedure by the university administration.

The protesters were continuing their demonstration in front of the VC office until the report was filed around 7:20 pm.

Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Buet, died after he was brutally beaten allegedly by some Chhatra League men at dormitory of the university between 7:00pm Sunday and 2:30am yesterday.

The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.

Law enforcers suspect, Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some recent deals with India.
