Ducsu VP Nur’s office padlocked

Former BCL men are threatening him, he claims

Muktijuddho Moncho, a platform comprising descendants of freedom fighters, yesterday padlocked Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Nurul Haque Nur’s office room at the student union building, demanding his resignation from the post of VP.

Labelling Nur corrupt, some activists of the platform, allegedly led by its spokesperson Prof AKM Jamal Uddin of DU’s sociology department, locked the room at around 1pm, said witnesses.

Prior to that, they burnt an effigy of Nur centring an unverified audio clip in which a person was heard requesting another to be a bank guarantor of a project.

Later, Muktijuddho Moncho activists pasted two posters on the room’s door which read “Corrupt VP Nur has to resign, he has no place on Dhaka University campus.”

During that time, AKM Jamal Uddin said, ”We are giving Nur a 48-hour ultimatum, he will have to resign from the post willingly and leave the campus by that time. Muktijuddho Moncho does not want to see him on the campus anymore. We hope that law enforcers will dig out the information of corruption after taking him in remand.”

He said they would submit a memorandum to the vice chancellor demanding Nur’s resignation.

Talking to The Daily Star, Nur alleged some non-students are hatching conspiracy against him for long using the name of Muktijuddho Moncho and Prof Jamal gave him death threats in a live video on social media.

“Some expelled Chhatra League leaders have been threatening me in many ways. I was saved today as I was not on the campus, otherwise they would have attacked me once again,” said Nur.

Prof Jamal Uddin could not be reached over phone for comments despite multiple attempts.

Contacted, general secretary of the Moncho Al Mamun said,”In that audio clip Ducsu VP Nur was talking about illegal monetary transaction. He cannot hold the VP post after being involved with such illegal activities. That is why we padlocked his room.”

Asked about the audio clip, Nur said that some part of the clip is him conversing with another person and some parts are edited.

“I was talking with one of my relatives to help out my sister by becoming bank guarantor of a project. That’s entirely a family matter and there was no proof of me being involved in any corruption,’’ he added.

The room remained locked for nearly four hours, and at around 4pm Noor along with some activists of his organisation broke it open.

Nur also alleged that he contacted the university proctor to help break the lock but the latter denied, saying he had nothing to do with Ducsu related problems.

Mentionable, a private television channel on Tuesday aired a report with the audio clip in question.
