UK elections: Tulip, Rushanara, Rupa re-elected

Bangladeshi-origin candidates Tulip Siddiq, Rushanara Ali and Rupa Huq were re-elected as parliament members in the UK national election.

Tulip Siddiq, granddaughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, won a landslide victory in the UK general election with Labour Party ticket.

Voters in the North London constituency of Hampstead and Kilburn re-elected her as their MP.

Labour MP Tulip Siddiq has been electing as lawmaker in the seat since 2015 increasing her vote share in the 2017 elections.

Tulip, niece of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, bagged 28,080 votes while her nearest Conservatives' candidate Johnny Luc 13,892 votes, according to Bangla Daily Prothom Alo.  

Besides, another two Bangladesh-origin Rushanara Ali and Rupa Huq were also re-elected in the elections from their respective constituencies, report BSS.

Tulip thanked the people of her constituency for reelecting her as member the of British parliament.

In a tweet message, she said “Thank you Hampstead & Kilburn for electing me once again. Thanks to all my volunteers & my family. But devastated by our national results- sorry to lose such talented MPs. Tough times ahead, we have to work together.”
