Civil society members and guardians of students today criticised the Dhaka University vice chancellor for allegedly supporting the controversial activities of Chhatra League men on the campus.

They came up with the criticism in a memorandum submitted to DU VC Prof Md Aktaruzzaman this afternoon, three days after a group of BCL men and Muktijudhho Moncho leaders attacked Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur and his followers.

Referring to the attack on Nur, they said allegations of such type of incidents were brought in the past, but the university authority neither conduct any fair investigation nor ensure any justice.

They also accused the VC of supporting the attackers and alleged that the university administration did not put any heed to the volatile situation rather threatened the victims to expel from the university.

“Despite being a vice chancellor of the university, you have failed to uphold your transparency as a teacher of all students. You are the highest authority of the university and you are being paid by the state exchequer and that is accumulated from our tax return,” they said in the memorandum.

“Why are you behaving like an official of a political government after being the chief of an autonomous body? It’s not understandable to us,” the guardians and civil society members said.

“We are stunned, shocked and anxious noticing your biased role. Your role is instigating the offenders to indulge in violent activities on the university campus,” they said in the memorandum.

Writer Rakhal Raha on behalf of the guardians and civil society members read out the memorandum before the vice chancellor.

He also sought the VC’s administrative cooperation to Ducsu VP Nur and his 24 followers, who were injured in the attack on Sunday.

While submitting the memorandum to the DU VC at the lounge of his office on the campus, the guardians and civil society members also demanded punishment to the BCL men, who carried out controversial activities on the campus.

VC Akhtaruzzaman assures of taking legal action

At that time, the DU vice chancellor assured the concerned parents and representatives of civil society to take legal action against the students involved in the attack on Nur and 24 others.

“We formed an investigation committee. Besides, police lodged case following my request,” he said.

Police also assured that they would bring the culprits to book upholding their professionalism and in line with the directive of the government, the VC said.
