2 killed in Meghna launch collision

Two passengers were killed and eight others were injured as a launch hit another in Meghna river in Barishal early today.

The deceased were identified as Mahmuda Khatun, 25, wife of Rubel of Bhandarikathi in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal and her six-year-old son Momin, reports our Barishal correspondent.

Ashim Kumar Sarker, officer-in-charge of Hizla Police Station, said Bhandaria-bound launch Farhan-9 from Dhaka hit the middle point of Dhaka-bound launch Kirtonkhola-10 coming from Barishal at Majerchar in Hizla upazila around 12:30am.

The accident left two passengers of Kirtonkhola-10 dead on the spot and eight passengers injured of both the launches, he said

The incident might have taken place due to dense fog and poor visibility, added the police official.
