Students block Shahbagh demanding deferment of city polls date
A group of Dhaka University students today blocked Shahbagh intersection in the capital demanding deferment of Dhaka north and south city corporation polls scheduled for January 30.
Around 500 students blocked the busy intersection of the city around 5:00 pm to press home their demand, as the election date coincides with Saraswati Puja celebrations across the country.
Vehicular movements on the roads connecting to the intersection were suspended following the blockade.
The students withdrew their agitation around 6:30 pm, giving an 18-hour ultimatum to the authorities concerned to press home their demand.
They also threatened to besieged the Election Commission office in Agargaon tomorrow if their demand is not met within the deadline.
On December 22, the Election Commission announced that the elections of Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City will be held on January 30.
