Azam, Masood tons put Pakistan on top
Stumps, Day 2:
Babar Azam and Shan Masood struck centuries as Pakistan took a lead of 109 runs at the end of the second day of the Rawalpindi Test, with seven first-innings wickets remaining.
Azam remained unbeaten on 143 while Asad Shafiq was batting on 60 as Pakistan scored 342 for the loss of three wickets after Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 in their first innings on Friday.
Abu Jayed took the first two wickets while Taijul Islam took the wicket of the other centurion, Masood.
Tea, Day 2:
Shan Masood was bowled by Taijul Islam for 100, but Pakistan were on top at 206 for three, trailing by 27 runs at Tea on Day 2 of Rawalpindi Test.
The elegant left-hander departed for a 160-ball 100 as Asad Shafiq joined Pakistan's man for all seasons, Babar Azam, who was unbeaten on 69.
Masood was the only wicket to fall in this session after Abu Jayed had taken two wickets in the first session of the day.
Things could have been a bit better though for the visitors as both Masood and Azam were given reprieves by Bangladesh. Azam was dropped at long-off by Ebadat Hossain off the bowling of Taijul while Masood nicked one behind, but no one appealed.
Lunch, Day 2:
Abu Jayed got rid of the two Alis -- opener Abid and skipper Azhar -- but Pakistan were in a commanding position in the Rawalpindi Test, having reached 95 for two at lunch on Day 2.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 in their first innings on Day 1.
Jayed, the right-arm seamer, struck in his very first over -- second over of the innings, inducing Abid for a caught behind. 32-year-old Abid, who became the first batsman to score a century in his first Test and first ODI matches, had got a second Test hundred in his second Test as well. But Jayed forced him to play a shot away from his body, his footwork minimal, with Liton Das gleefully accepting a catch behind the stumps.
However, Shan Masood, the other opener, was fluent as he brought up his half century in quick time in company of Azhar.
While the other two pacers Ebadat Hossain Rubel Hossain were erratic and went for plenty, it was left to Jayed to return and break the partnership. He got rid of the Pakistan skipper for 34, another attempted shot outside off-stump, this time Najmul Hossain Shanto accepting the catch at slips.
Jayed finished the session with two wickets for 22 runs in 10 overs and was complemented by the miserly spin of Taijul Islam -- 11 in six overs -- as the visitors were looking to put the hosts under pressure after having put up a disappointing show with the bat.
