7 killed in road accidents in 3 districts

Seven people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Sherpur, Mymensingh and Satkhira districts today.

In Mymensingh, four persons were killed and five others injured in a road accident involving a bus and a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Raghunathpur area of Haluaghat upazila this afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Ariful Islam, 18, of Bohela village, Sajib Mia, 22, of Bagmara village, Mizanur Rahman, 18, of Nishchintapur village, and Shariful Islam, 20, of Sakuai village in the upazila.

The incident took place around 4:00pm on Mymensingh-Haluaghat road when the Dhaka-bound bus hit the auto-rickshaw coming from opposite direction, leaving Ariful and Sajib dead on the spot and seven injured, reports our local correspondent quoting police.

All of them were passengers of the auto-rickshaw including its driver, said Biplob Kumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Haluaghat Police Station.

The injured persons were first taken to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex but later referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) as their condition deteriorated, where Mizanur and Shariful later succumbed to their injuries, said the OC.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the MMCH morgue for autopsy. 

Police also seized the vehicles but the bus driver managed to flee from the scene after the accident. Drives are on to arrest the bus driver in a case filed with the police station in this connection, the OC added.

Md Ali Asgar, acting coordinator of BNP Haluaghat upazila unit, said the victims were activists of BNP and its front organisations of Beeldora union in Haluaghat.

They were on their way to the BNP office in Haluaghat Uttar Bazar to attend a programme observing International Mother Language Day, he added.

In Sherpur, two schoolboys were killed in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a truck at Baromaisa area of Nakla upazila this morning.

The deceased were identified as Maruf Ahmed, a seventh-grader, and Hamidul Islam, an eighth-grader, both residents of Baromaisa village, reports our Mymensingh correspondent quoting police.

The incident took place on Nakla-Baromaisa road around 11:45am when the two boys were riding a motorcycle and a Nakla-bound bus hit them from the opposite direction, leaving Maruf dead on the spot and Hamidul critically injured, said Alamgir Hossain Shah, officer-in-charge of Nakla Police Station.

Locals rushed Hamidul to Nakla Upazila Health Complex and he was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), but he died while being taken to the hospital, he said.

When informed about the accident, police recovered the bodies and handed them over to the family members. Police also seized the truck and arrested helper Farhad Hossain, but its driver managed to flee the scene, the OC also said.

A case was lodged with Nakla Police Station in this connection, he added.

In Satkhira, a six-year-old boy died today after he was run over by an easy-bike.

The deceased was identified as Shimul, son of Emadul Islam of Katiya Sarkar Para area of Satkhira town, reports our Satkhira correspondent.

The incident took place this morning when Shimul was hit by the easy-bike while crossing the road in Katiya Sarkar Para, near Rajarbagan Govt College, and was left critically injured, Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said quoting witnesses.

Locals rushed him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the OC added.
