Govt primary school students vote to pick representatives
Election to the students' council -- a concept aimed at practicing democratic norms from childhood -- began at all government primary schools across the country this morning.
The voting began at 9:00am and will continue till 1:00pm, according to a press release of the primary and mass education ministry.
A total of 76,62,353 students from class three to five will cast their votes to select seven representatives from each school.
There are a total of 8,27,595 candidates contesting the elections against 4,41,028 posts.
Students are discharging duties as election commissioners, presiding officers and polling officers. They have been working under the supervision of headmasters and assistant headmasters.
The students' representatives will work to maintain cleanliness of the school premises, waste management, cultural and sports activities, water resources, and gardening.
The student council elections were introduced in 2010 at 100 primary schools in 20 upazilas.
