Noakhali BCL leader murder: Accused killed in ‘gunfight’ with police
An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir who was also accused for the murder of a Chhatra League leader in Noakhali's Begumganj was killed in a "gunfight" with police early today.
Nazrul Islam, 26, was accused for the murder of local BCL leader Rakibul Hossain, said Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Begumganj Model Police Station.
Joint General Secretary of BCL's Ulyapur union unit Rakibul, 20, was killed and 10 other activists were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Shibir men in the upazila yesterday.
Later, a police team conducted a drive at Amanullahpur village to arrest the accused around 3:30am, the OC said.
Sensing presence of the lawmen, a group of "Shibir cadres" fired gunshots at the police and in self-defense, police also fired back, triggering the gunfight, he said.
Later, police found the body of Shibir activist Nazrul there.
The law enforcers recovered a pistol, three rounds of bullets and three knives from the spot, the police official told a correspondent.
