Ishraque files lawsuit for cancellation of DSCC election
Ishraque Hossain, who contested the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) polls for the post of mayor from BNP, filed a lawsuit with an election tribunal in Dhaka today, demanding cancellation of the February 1 election.
Judge Utpal Bhattacharya accepted the suit and will pass an order later in the day on summoning the defendants, Advocate Taherul Islam Tauhid confirmed to The Daily Star.
The chief election commissioner, commission's secretary, winner candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and five others have been made defendants to contest the suit.
In the suit, Ishraque claimed that the February 1 election was held amid irregularities and corruption, adding that on the day, a satisfactory number of voters did not turn up to cast their votes.
Ishraque also alleged that the election commissioner, in collusion with others, declared Taposh the mayor of DSCC.
He also appealed to the tribunal to declare election process for the post of mayor in the DSCC polls 2020 void and order for a fresh election.
Yesterday, Tabith Awal, BNP-nominated candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral election, filed a similar lawsuit with the election tribunal, demanding cancellation of the February 1 election.
