2 Shibir men among 3 hurt in Joypurhat ‘gunfight’
Three people including two leaders of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, sustained bullet injuries in a “gunfight” with police in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat early today.
The injured are Md Abduzar Giffari, president of Joypurhat district Shibir unit, its secretary Omar Ali and their associate Al Amin, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.
During the gunfight, police arrested Md Sujaur Rahman, a Union Paishad (UP) level leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, from the spot with a shotgun and several sharp weapons, police said.
A police team went to Jatair village in the upazila with the arrested Shibir leaders and Al Amin to recover arms.
As the police team reached there, Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire on the law enforcers to snatch away the arrestees, Md Ashraful Islam, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station, told The Daily Star.
In retaliation, police fired back, triggering a “gunfight” between them, leaving Giffari, Omar and Al Amin bullet-injured.
After the “gunfight”, police took them to Joypurhat Modern Hospital for treatment.
Three policemen also sustained minor injuries during the “gunfight”, claimed the OC.
Earlier yesterday, members of Joypurhat Rab-5 unit arrested Giffari, Omar and Al Amin from Kadamtoli area in the upazila and handed them over to Joypurhat police.
The elite force also seized two pistols, four bullets, 21 crude bombs and six crude bombs from their possession.
