Police seized 15 tonnes of government rice which were allegedly being smuggled from a local supply depot in Bogura's Gabtali upazila this morning.

On information that some people were selling government rice from the Sabekpara government LSD to a rice mill owner, a team of police conducted a raid in the area around 10am, reports our local correspondent quoting Md Nuruzaman, officer in-charge (OC) of Gabtali Model Police Station.

"We arrested Amzad Hossain Shahin, the rice mill owner," the OC said.

Police also found Shariful Islam -- the officer in-charge of the LSD -- and a night guard on spot, and took them to the police station for questioning.

"We have information that they are involved in the smuggling. They were taken to our station for saving them from public anger," the OC of Gabtali Model Police Station said.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was contacted regarding the matter. Further steps will be taken after the ACC officials' arrival, the OC further said.

When contacted, Harunur Rashid, Gabtali upazila food controller, denied knowing anything regarding the matter.
