9 wild animals killed by villagers in Sylhet

Nine wild animals, including six golden jackals, were killed by villagers at Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet today.

Confirming the matter to our Sylhet correspondent, SM Sajjad Hossain, deputy conservator of forest and divisional forest officer in Sylhet, said they have sent a team of local forest staffers to the spot to get first-hand reports and to inform the matter to police.

"Our forest ranger will visit the village tomorrow morning and take legal action against the people involved in the killings," he said.

Abdul Karim Kim, general secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa) in Sylhet, said people in the area have committed similar offences in the past but escaped punishment.

Killing of wild animals, poaching and selling of birds openly are common practice in the area, said.

"There is also a restaurant which has been selling wild bird for years without any legal action. All these activities must be stopped," he said.

Talking to the correspondent, Abdur Rashid, chairman of Fatepur union parishad said the other animals were two large Indian civets and a Javan mongoose.

"I came to know of the killings of the wild animals from the forest department. I will look into the matter as the forest department told me that they would file a case in this connection," the chairman said.
