Man who ‘tried to send 4 women to Canada’ on 2-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed Adib Hossain Mollah, a member of suspected human trafficking gang, on a two-day remand in a case filed for attempting to send four women to Canada with fake visas.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossan passed the order after Mehedi Hassan, a sub-inspector of Police Bureau of Investigation, also investigation officer of the case, produced him before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Adib was directly involved in trafficking four women to Canada with fake visas. As such he needs to be placed in remand to find the whereabouts of others who are responsible for such crimes.

Defence meanwhile submitted a petition seeking bail and cancellation of the remand prayer in the case filed with Paltan Police Station on June 10.

After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail petition and placed Adib on a two-day remand.

According to the prosecution, Adib and five others allegedly took Tk 22 lakh from one Anwar Hossain of Nawabganj in Dhaka promising to send his wife, daughter, brother's wife and daughter to Canada in February last year.

After receiving the money, the traffickers took their passports and collected visas from Canadian Embassy in Bangladesh.

Later, they took the four women to India and the Indian Embassy found that all visas before them were fake and they were sent back to Bangladesh.

Following the incident, Anwar asked them to return the money but the traffickers on May 20 this year threatened Anwar and his family members with dire consequences, the complainant alleged.
