Tech sitcoms that you should binge

Comedy shows continue to dominate mainstream television entertainment as newer genres keep emerging. Tech comedy has gained massive popularity in the mainstream media, alongside the rise of big tech. The most popular ones are about science fiction served with nihilist humour, struggles of a tech start-up, and general day to day struggles of IT guys in a regular office environment.

Unfortunately, much like gender disparity in the tech industry itself, the tech comedy shows have a severe lack of representation of women in its cast and the lack of female presence as leads on tech comedies in present too. The only show featuring women in tech, The Developers, is currently in post-production, and it's a drama series, not a comedy. Regardless of the lack of gender inclusivity that we hope changes soon, here are some classic and hilarious tech comedies to watch.

Silicon Valley

It's a show set in San Franciso, California, about an aspiring tech and his eternal struggle to establish a venture in the global centre of the tech industry, Silicon Valley. Throughout the 6 seasons, the show makers try their best to create a parody of the Silicon Valley culture. The protagonist of the show is a programmer, who spends the first season trying to arrange the core team for his start-up, with quirky and awkward characters who make subtle but great comedic moments without having to resort to cheap humour. After the pilot season, the show picks up its pace, even for a comedy, as the lead characters start facing bigger crises with financing their venture, fending off the competition and internal power struggle within the company. The challenges faced by the characters prevent the humour from becoming dry and repetitive, as the quirky comments and convincingly funny reactions of the powerful ensemble cast will keep you entertained throughout.

Rick & Morty

This animated show is a fresh perspective of science fiction with a dark sense of humour. The main character Rick the mad scientist and his teenage grandson Morty are engaged in episode long adventures where they use virtually impossible technologies, usually invented by Rick, to solve a personal problem of theirs. The show originally started as a parody film of a popular science fiction movie "Back to the Future", so it has all the classic science fiction elements like time travel, intergalactic fights, etc. But the hilarious bits of the show comes with the fact that Rick is irresponsible and alcoholic, and Morty is not a very bright or brave sidekick, and most of their adventures are less about the technology itself, but rather about the problems they face in their personal and family life.

The IT Crowd

If you are looking for a classic live-studio audience style show with a deadpan delivery of British humour, The IT Crowd is the show for you. The story features three IT staff members and their technologically challenged boss in a fictional office in London, set in the late 2000s when computer technology was becoming an indispensable part of. The IT staff are what you expect them to be, socially awkward with self-deprecating but snarky humour. They are treated differently than the rest of the members of the office and have to work in a dirty and dingy basement whereas the rest of the company staff gets to work in a modern office with a killer view of the city of London.
