Embezzling Tk 45 lakh: 2 GPO employees held in Ctg

Two employees of Savings Department of General Post Office (GPO) in Chattogram were detained by the authority and handed over to the police on charge of embezzling Tk 45 lakh from clients which was deposited at GPO.

The two arrestees are: Assistant Post Master-6 Nur Mohammed, hailing from Boalkhali upazila, and Counter Operator Sarwar Alam Khan, hailing from Lohagara upazila, our Chattogram staff correspondent reports quoting police.

They were detained by the authority during an internal drive and later handed over to Kotwali Police Station after the duo were found guilty during an internal audit, said Noble Chakma, Kotwali Zone Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

Later, the duo was handed over to police, he added.

The GPO authority also filed a complaint to police while police is now sending the duo to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for further legal action after filing a general diary (GD), the police official said.

Police sources said GPO Post Office Inspector Rajib Pal filed the complaint with the police station. According to the complaint, the officials found that Tk 45 lakh were embezzled and they interrogated Nur Mohammed over the issue during a visit. After quizzing, Nur Mohammed admitted about the embezzlement of money and Tk 21.49 lakh was recovered from him in two phases.

However, rest of the money is yet to be recovered.
