Biman staff held over smuggled gold
Law enforcers have arrested a staff of Biman Bangladesh Airlines in connection with last month’s seizure of 125 smuggled gold bars at Shahjalal airport in Dhaka.
Abdus Sattar, 45, a technician, was one of the eight people sued by the Customs Intelligence officials following recovery of the gold, Monjur Morshed, assistant commissioner of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) told The Daily Star today.
"On information, we arrested Sattar from Uttara area on Tuesday night," the police official added.
"So far we came to know that he was one of the owners of the consignment," he said.
In a drive on December 23, customs intelligence officials seized the 14.5 kilogrammes gold worth around Tk 7 crore from two female passengers -- Anwara Begum and Nahida Farzana Moni -- who traveled from Chittagong to Dhaka on Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Kuwait-Chittagong-Dhaka flight.
Moments later, the officials arrested -- Anwar Parvez and Osman Sohel -- who handed the gold to the females, from customs house area.
