NBR holds lottery on sales receipts generated by EFDs

For the first time, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) held a lottery today with the receipts generated through electronic fiscal devices (EFDs) against purchases made by consumers from stores.

The move aims at encouraging people to ask salespeople for machine-generated in order to ensure that the actual amount of Value Added Tax (VAT), a type of consumption tax, goes to the state coffers properly.

The NBR held a draw of 10,84,579 receipts, generated by EFDs from January 1 to January 31, in order to give 101 prizes to buyers who bought from shops that used EFDs, a kind of transaction register.

The first prize was Tk 1 lakh and went to receipt number 00221GEMMWAK039.

The second prize, Tk 50,000, went to receipt number 001820SPXYAOH781.

The customers who have the original receipts bearing the winning numbers will get the prize by applying to the NBR.

The NBR said it treats receipts on purchases from stores having EFDs as coupons.

It declared Tk 25,000 as the third prize.

The draw of lottery by receipts has been organised to encourage customers to pay VAT, said the NBR after holding the event at its headquarters.

It said it will publish the results of the draw on its website in the next three working days, and winners holding the receipts with numbers will have to apply to the field level VAT offices by the last working day of this month.

The revenue administration announced 101 prizes in December last year after it started installing EFDs at shops mainly in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Until now, it set up 1,471 EFDs and aims to increase the number in the coming months.

The NBR said it will hold draws on the fifth day of each month based on sales receipts generated by EFDs in the previous month.
