Zoo should be run by experts
The condition of the country’s zoos are pitiable as these are not run with a modern outlook where zoos are not just an exposition of wild life, but also a research centre.
One of the renowned zoologist of the country Prof Dr Noor Jahan Sarker of Dhaka University tells The Daily Star that the zoos should play the role of revival of endangered animals, a primary school for wild life biologists, an education centre for the general people and a means to foster international relationship through exchange of knowledge on wildlife.
Unfortunately none of our zoos play this role as these are being run on makeshift basis.
Dr Noor Jahan notes that country had produced 400 wild life biologists—but they work in all places except the zoos because the government did not create any opportunity for them. She strongly suggests placing wild life biologists in charge of running the zoos.
