One-year-old burnt to death in Gazipur fire

A one-year old boy was burnt to death this morning after a fire broke out at a colony in Kaliakair upazila.

The deceased, Ismail, was son of Badal Mia of Gaibandha district.

The fire broke out at the colony around 7:30 am and spread rapidly, said Asad Saifullah, Assistant Sub-inspector of Kaliakair Police Station.

Two firefighting units doused the blaze after two hours of efforts. Later, firemen recovered the child's body from his house, said the ASI.

Eighteen houses were damaged in the fire.

Local administration has provided Tk 2,000 to each of the affected families and Tk 20,000 was given to Ismail's family, said Lokman Hossain, chairman of Mouchak Union Parishad.

Police said the fire might have originated from a gas cylinder.

Last month, four people were killed in a fire at another colony in the area.
