Five arrested for attacking MP’s car in Barishal
Police have arrested five people after a case was filed in connection with an attack on Barishal-4 MP Pankaj Nath's car, said Asim Kumar Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Hijla Police Station.
The case was filed last night after the attack on the MP's car at the Hijla ferry terminal area on June 8, reports our Barishal correspondent.
The plaintiff of the case, Ibrahim Sardar, general secretary of Hijla Upazila Sramik League, claimed the attack was carried out by supporters of Barjaliya Union's Awami League (AL) candidate and Upazila AL Vice-president Enayet Hossain Hawlader.
The glass of MP's car was shattered during the incident, said Ibrahim, adding that the car's driver and several others were also injured.
Enayet Hossain Hawlader said that the incident happened as the party leaders and workers got angry when the MP spoke in favour of an independent candidate rather than the party's candidate for the UP elections of Barjaliya Union Parishad.
The OC of Hijla Police Station said that both groups were agitated even before the incident. When one group started throwing bricks at their rivals, the clash started.
Ibrahim has filed a case with Hijla Police Station against supporters of the rival group. Police have already arrested five people and the rest will be arrested soon, the OC added.
Pankaj Nath said that after the meeting, he was on his way to Hijla ferry ghat when Ibrahim Sardar and Enayet Hossain Hawladar's supporters engaged in a clash.
The brickbats were not thrown directly at him but some hit his car and shattered the glass, said the MP, adding that he does not want to take any legal action in this regard and he is trying to settle the situation.
