According to Rahman, Rubel will be portraying the role of an elderly filmmaker who is influenced by Satyajit Ray throughout his life.
Under the banner of Imation Creator, "Dear Satyajit" is a tribute film, marking the birth centenary of Ray.
"Netflix has paid their tribute to the legend through the 'Ray' series," says the director. "Two other films are also announced in Kolkata on this auspicious occasion, this is where my idea of making 'Dear Satyajit' in Bangladesh was incepted. "It is Ray, who has enlightened the path of filmmaking in the South Asian subcontinent, earning international recognition."
The "Sutopar Thikana" famed director also said that the plot of this film underlies representing three filmmakers from three different generations. One is Satyajit Ray himself. A portrayal of Ray's philosophy will be seen through the works of Asif Mahmud (Ahmed Rubel), an elderly filmmaker who is inspired by Ray. Young filmmaker Aparajita will represent another generation. The artiste for the role is yet to be finalised. The central characters' devotion to Ray will be the highlight of the film.
Primary locations for the film include Dhaka, Kishoreganj, and anywhere between Manikganj or Kapasia.
"Ahmed Rubel was my ultimate choice to play a senior filmmaker from Bangladesh. While writing the script, I thought of him," shares Rahman.
Ahmed Rubel shares that he is hopeful about the project. "The idea itself is very intriguing," he says. "When I was offered the film, it made me happy to know that someone took the initiative to make a film as a tribute to Ray." This film is Rubel's first project with Rahman.
The film's shooting is set to begin next month, and it is expected to release on Ray's birthday (May 2), next year. On the other hand, Rahman's upcoming film "Dhaka Dream" will hit theatres on October 22.
