Six elephants enter Bangladesh from India via Sunamganj border
A herd of six elephants including an infant entered the Bangladesh border at Sunamganj's Tahirpur upazila last night.
However, no damage was caused by the herd and the locals were made aware to be cautious of the situation, reports our local correspondent quoting Rayhan Kabir, upazila nirbahi officer of Tahirpur.
"With the help of the Forest Department, we've alerted the border villages and urged them to light torch fire at night," he said.
The herd is strolling from Barogop Tila area to Maharam Tila under Bardhal Uttar union of the upazila, forest officials said.
Arun Baran Chowdhury, assistant conservator of forests of the Forest Department, said, "The herd is at the zero point in the border at 9:30pm. BGB communicated with the BSF and the flashlights on the Indian side were switched off for the herd to leave Bangladesh silently."
Earlier on November 16 night, a herd of four elephants entered Bangladesh through the same area. That herd also left within two days.
There has been a spate of elephant killing in Sherpur, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazar late last year. The month of November alone saw eight elephants electrocuted and shot dead.
