DU students vandalise BRTC bus over attack on peer
Dhaka University students allegedly vandalised three double decker BRTC buses at Shahbagh intersection in the capital yesterday evening following an assault on a fellow student by a BRTC bus staff.
Azman Samir, second year student of Persian language and literature of the university, came under attack by the BRTC bus staff inside the bus while he was moving toward Motsho Bhaban from Shonir Akhra in the capital, reports our DU correspondent.
Talking to our correspondent, the wounded student alleged that the bus staff misbehaved with him as he got on the bus without mistakenly taking a ticket.
Despite taking the ticket later, the staff and driver still misbehaved with him again, and at one stage attacked him while he was protesting the rude behaviour.
Later, some of his classmates were informed of the incident who came to the spot and barred three buses at the Shahbagh intersection and reportedly vandalised them.
However the students denied the allegation.
"We were not involved in the incident," said the student, Azman Samir, adding that they were taking preparation to file a case against the accused.
DU Proctor AkM Golam Rabbani told The Daily Star that he heard of the incident. "It was an unexpected and regretful matter. A student was attacked by bus staff. We have handed over the matter to the police for legal action and asked them to scrutinize the matter."
When contacted, Moudut Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station said they have been informed of the incident but was unable to shed details on the matter.
This correspondent failed to reach the bus staff for comments.
