Murder attempt on Zafar Iqbal: Main accused Foyzul gets life imprisonment
A Sylhet Court today sentenced main accused Foyzul Hasan to life term imprisonment and Md Sohag Miah to four years' jail in a case filed over the attempted murder of Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus on March 3, 2018.
Sylhet Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal's judge Muhammad Nurul Amin Biplob also acquitted four other accused as allegations brought against them were not proven.
The accused are now in jail, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
The eminent educationist and writer was attacked and stabbed in the head by Foyzul Hasan during a programme at the university's open stage.
Soon after the attack, Foyzul was caught red-handed by the students and teachers and was handed over to police.
Prof Zafar Iqbal was first treated at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and later at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
The next day, SUST Registrar Mohd Ishfaqul Hossain filed a case with Jalalabad Police Station under Anti-Terrorism Act.
After investigation, the police station's Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam, also investigation officer of the case, presented the charge sheet to the metropolitan magistrate court accusing Foyzul and five others on May 6, 2018.
The four acquitted accused are Foyzul's father Hafez Maulana Atiqur Rahman, mother Minara Begum, uncle Fozlur Rahman and brother Enamul Hasan.
A Sylhet court on October 4 that year formed charges against the six and later in 2020, the case was forwarded to Sylhet Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal.
