Should the value of taka be depreciated?
Over the past year, the value of taka depreciated 3.18% against the US dollar. It is 8.56 percent in India, 30.7 percent in Pakistan and 79.82 percent in Sri Lanka. Depreciation of Maldives currency is a bit less than Bangladesh. According to the data it may seem that the economic condition of Bangladesh is better than all other countries of South Asia except Maldives.
But is that what's happening? Or is the rate being artificially reduced? If that is the case, what could be the result of this artificial control?
The Daily Star reporter AKM Zamir Uddin joins Ahsan Habib to discuss the current valuation of taka in today's Straight from Star Newsroom.
