Taijul penalised by ICC for losing temper
Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam has been fined 25 per cent of his match fees, slapped with a demerit point as well, for throwing the ball at Angelo Mathews even though the Sri Lanka batter was safe inside his crease and was not even looking to take a run.
The incident happened in the 69th over of Sri Lanka's innings, bowled by the left-arm off-spinner, on day three of the Dhaka Test yesterday. Taijul, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period, later admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Chris Broad.
When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.
