Shakib only second to Botham in terms of fifty and a fifer in a single Test
Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has taken himself to a new height as he has bagged a five-wicket haul and also scored a fifty in a Test on 10 occasions, the second most after legendary all-rounder Ian Botham of England.
Shakib, playing his 61st Test, notched his 27th fifty and bagged his 19th fifer in Tests in the ongoing game against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Botham, who played a total of 102 Tests, has bagged a fifer and scored a fifty in the same Test on 11 occasions.
Next to Shakib on the list is India's Ravichandran Ashwin, who on six occasions were able to take a five-wicket haul and score a fifty in the same Test.
Despite Shakib achieving this feat, Bangladesh remain in a precarious situation in their ongoing Test against Sri Lanka. The Tigers lost two crucial wickets – those of Shakib and Liton Das – soon after Lunch as they are reeling on 169 for eight in their second innings, with just a 28-run lead.
Shakib and Liton had stabilised the innings after Bangladesh lost overnight batter Mushfiqur Rahim early on the day. However, their 103-run sixth-wicket stand came to an end just after Lunch when Liton (52 off 135) chipped one back to the pacer Asitha Fernando, who took a magnificent one-handed catch diving low to his right.
Just three overs later, Asitha struck once again, this time removing the danger-man Shakib (58 off 72) as the left-hander gloved it back to the wicketkeeper trying to pull a short delivery.
