Bangladesh will call for green finance and global cooperation at the Stockholm +50 that began in Sweden today (June 2, 2022), as the country bears the brunt of climate change impacts because of Covid-19 pandemic and Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen is attending the two-day global event joined by world leaders and representatives from the governments, business, international organisations, civil society and youths.

"Our minister will call for climate fund from the developed countries, cooperation for global economic recovery and green technologies for renewable energy," a foreign ministry official told The Daily Star.

The international meeting, which commemorates the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment and celebrates 50 years of global environmental action, is aimed at driving action towards a healthy planet for prosperity of all.

Co-hosted by Sweden and Kenya, Stockholm+50 is taking place under the theme "A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity".

Bangladesh is at the forefront of climate vulnerabilities, with frequent cyclones, flooding, rise in temperature, salinity intrusion – all that are increasing the vulnerability of people, forced migration, loss of livelihoods, etc.

At the same time, the energy-hungry country also needs to move from fossil fuel to renewable energy, but there is a lack of technology transfer from the developed nations.

"The global economic recovery from the pandemic is now a major challenge. We will call for global efforts to make sure that the gains we have made are not derailed further," the foreign ministry official also this correspondent.

Minister Momen, who reached Stockholm yesterday, is also scheduled to attend some side events including meeting Swedish minister for Development and Cooperation. From there, he is scheduled to fly to Hungary for an official meeting on June 6.
