5 injured in clash between police, Adamji Bihari Camp residents
At least five people were injured during a clash between police and members of Bihari community in Sadar upazila of Narayanganj today.
The clash occurred following the arrest of 31 people from Adamji Bihari Camp during an anti-drug raid early today (June 13, 2022), our Narayanganj correspondent reports.
The clash ensued when camp residents gathered in front of the Siddhirganj Police Station on Shimrail-Adamji-Chashara Road around 7:00am, demanding release of fellow camp dwellers.
According to witnesses, police at first tried to negotiate with them and assured them that they would release the detainees if they are found innocent. But the demonstrators again demanded release of their fellows and at one stage police started to charge batons to disperse the members of Bihari community.
The police also fired teargas shells and shots, prompting the demonstrators to hurl brick bats on the law enforcers, witnesses said.
Vehicular movement was halted for several hours during the incident, police said.
Two constables of Siddhirganj Police Station who sustained injuries during the incident received primary treatment, said Narayanganj's Additional Superintendent of Police Amir Khasru.
Quoting locals, our Narayanganj correspondent reports that three injured demonstrators were released after treatment at a private hospital.
Confirming the incident, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Zaidul Alam said that Siddhirganj police conducted a three-hour anti-drug operation early today and arrested 31 people from Adamji Bihari Camp.
The clash occurred when the residents of the camp protested the arrests, the official said.
The 31 arrestees were made accused in a case filed over beating Sub-inspector Syed Azizul Haque in a mosque at the Bihari Camp on Friday noon. The arrestees were produced before a local court in the case, Additional SP Amir Khasru said.
