Shakib's dismissal irks Domingo

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo expressed his frustration with the way Shakib Al Hasan got out after an excellent start in the first T20I against the West Indies in Dominica on Saturday, which was eventually abandoned due to rain.

Having been put into bat first, Bangladesh lost the wicket of Munim Shahriar in the first over and Shakib was in the middle batting at No. 3.

The left-hander was stroking the ball well right from the word go as Bangladesh reached 36 in 3.3 overs, with Anamul Haque also playing his part with the bat. Following Anamul's dismissal for 16 off 10, Shakib continued his aggression but was eventually dismissed for 29 off 15 deliveries.

The left-hander, who smashed two sixes and two fours in his innings, edged one to the keeper while trying to chase a googly from Hayden Walsh Jr.

Domingo felt it wasn't the right way to get out for an experienced batsman like Shakib.

"(Shakib Al Hasan) was positive. But Shakib got out in the wrong time. He knows that. We needed someone to get big scores. We need those in this format. We needed good partnerships, but as soon as partnerships were developing we lost wickets," the coach said in post-match briefing.

The South African felt Bangladesh failed to capitalise on a good start as they went from 36 for one at one stage to being 105 for eight in 13 overs, which was how the game ended. Domingo also said that with some practice before the second game, which is scheduled for tonight, his team will put in a better performance with the bat.

"At 45 for two, we got a really good start but then some really poor batting. I'm sure we'll be better in the next game; guys have had a long boat trip, no practice yesterday with the weather being disruptive. I'm sure we'll see an improved performance in the second match," the coach said.

Meanwhile, the coach said Nurul Hasan Sohan could be a very important player for his team in this format, with his specific attributes which aren't common in the team. The wicketkeeper-batter got 25 off 16 balls with one four and two sixes.

"Sohan, I think, can be a really important player for us in this format. He's a powerful guy, big hitter at the back end that gives us a new dimension. But he also took the wrong option with the dismissal. There is learning for him. But it's good to see him in good form, carrying the form from the Test matches," Domingo said.
