Suspended DIG Prisons Bazlur Rashid jailed for 5 years
Suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Bazlur Rashid was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for amassing Tk 3.14 crore beyond known sources of income.
He was also fined Tk 5 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve six months more in jail.
Judge Md Iqbal Hossain of the Special Judge's Court-5 of Dhaka delivered the verdict.
After delivering the verdict, the court cancelled his bail and sent him to jail.
The court also asked for confiscating his illegal assets in favour of the state.
Earlier on September 22, both the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court fixed today for delivery of the judgment in the case.
Earlier, the court recorded statements of 14 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
The court framed charges against the accused on October 22 of 2020 in the case.
ACC deputy director Md Nasir Uddin, also the investigation officer of the case, on August 26 the same year submitted the charge sheet to the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka.
The ACC arrested Bazlur Rashid in the case filed with ACC's Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka and showed him arrested in the case on October 20 of 2019.
The following day, the home ministry suspended him from the service.
According to the case statement, Bazlur signed a contract with a real estate company in 2018 to buy a flat in the capital's Siddheshwari Road area at Tk 3.09 crore.
From April 20 to June 7, 2018, Bazlur paid Tk 3.08 crore in cash and cheque, but during ACC officials' interrogation, he could not show any legal source of the money.
