His father was killed right before his eyes when he was only six-year-old. The son himself became a lawyer to fight the case filed over the murder of his father and ensured justice after 29 years.

A Gazipur court yesterday (October 31, 2022) handed rigorous imprisonment till death to two accused and life term jail to five others over the murder of Sultan Uddin (55) which took place 29 years ago, our Gazipur correspondent reported.

Sultan was stabbed and shot to death by his sibling Main Uddin Bepary (65), step-brother Abul Kashem Bepary, and their cohorts over land-related family feud on September 15, 1993 in Beraider Chala village under Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

Judge Bahauddin Kazi of Gazipur's Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court-2 delivered the verdict.

The two main accused – Main Uddin and Abul Kashem – were handed rigorous imprisonment till death and fined Tk 10,000 each while five others -- victim's brother Abdul Mannan (55), and local residents Siraj Uddin (55), Azizul Haq (60), Dulal Uddin (50), and Mayeen Uddin (60) -- were handed life term imprisonment.

One other accused, Gias Uddin (60), was acquitted as the charges against him could not be proven. Five more other accused in the case had passed away during the trial period.

The murder had happened right in front of the victim's family members, including Mustafizur Rahman Bahadur who was six-year-old then, while they were kept hostages before firearms and sharp weapons.

A general diary (GD) was made over the murder on August 31, and later a case was filed with Sreepur Police Station by victim's brother Motahar Hossain.

Decades later, Mustafizur grew up to become a lawyer and fight in the court for justice over his father's death as the plaintiff's lawyer.

After the verdict, Mostafizur Rahman told The Daily Star, "I was six years old when my father was killed. I grew up to be a lawyer to ensure justice for my father's murder. Even after 29 years, as a child, I have been able to ensure the trial of my father's murder, it is a big achievement for me."
