Doyel takes flight again
From donning the role of "Gulnur" in Nasiruddin Yousuff's "Alpha" to "Chandrabati" in N Rashed Chowdhury's film "Chandrabati Kotha", Dilruba Hossain Doyel has come a long way with her. Her life was not a bed of roses, but she carved her space in the industry. Recently, she has joined the cast of the film "Laal Shari", directed by Apu Biswas.
In an exclusive interview with Star Showbiz, Doyel shared thoughts on her career and more.
You have completed the shooting of the film "Kathgolap" recently.
I played the character of a housewife in this film. The storyline is so unique that I don't think any film has been made based on this plot. The film deals with the crisis of human relationships and mental health which we see in our daily life but hardly address it.
Generally, we don't see you in commercial mainstream films. However, you have joined the cast of the government-granted film "Laal Shari" directed by Apu Biswas.
When I did films like "Alpha", "Lal Moroger Jhuti" or "Chandrabati Kotha" and was modeling side by side, people used to ask me why don't work in commercial films. To be honest, we shouldn't label films by a specific genre like art or commercial. I never really got that many calls for commercial films.
When I got a call from Apu Biswas and read the script, I realized this is the type of film I want to work on. I think of myself as a Bengali by heart. It talks about the lives and struggles of weavers. In this world of fast fashion, we have forgotten the rich culture of our handloom industry. I just wanted to be part of this amazing film.
Did you face any struggles in the industry, being a single mother?
My own family, relatives, and friends criticised me as I was divorced and pregnant at a very young age. They never supported me when I needed them the most. I have come a long way after this. People think that the media industry is a bad place, but I haven't experienced the ugly side of the industry yet. The resistance I've faced is from my family.
Who do you want to work with in the future?
I want to work with emerging and young directors in the future. I feel like every generation thinks differently. So, there's so much to explore when you work with the younger generation. They have fresh ideas and plots.
What are your recent ventures?
Recently, I completed shooting for a web series with Tauquir Ahmed and Zahid Hasan. I played the love interest of Tauquir Ahmed. I am excited about the project, as the audience will discover me in a completely new way in this series.
Where do you want to see yourself after 5 years?
It's been a huge mental pressure for me when all the projects I worked on, were halted due to Covid and other difficulties. Now that they have started to release, I have been getting crucial response. I want to work as much as I can. I don't want to confine myself to anything. I want to work in web series and short films, especially in Tollywood. I think I am feeling mentally stable and cool recently.
