Black smoke engulfed the building following the explosion on the second floor, said Shahabul Haque Shabu, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station.

Some part of the building collapsed due to the explosion, fire and police officials said.

"Four units of firefighters rushed there on information around 10:50am," said Khaleda Yeasmin, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.

"Some said an air-condition exploded while some said it was a cylinder. Fire fighters are on the spot," she said.

She said the fire was brought under control around 11:15am.

A shopkeeper of a nearby building said that they heard a loud bang and saw a part of the building collapsing.

"Several of our employees suffered minor injuries as the glasses of our shop shattered due to the explosion," he told reporters on the spot.

Meanwhile, a bomb disposal unit was also seen at the spot.
