RU clashes: Students let VC leave after two hours confinement
Rajshahi University students let the university Vice-Chancellor Prof Golam Shabbir leave senate building after two-hour confinement this afternoon following yesterday's clash between students and locals.
The clashes took place in the city's Binodpur area near the campus, leaving more than 220 people injured.
The VC was allowed to leave after he assured the students of fulfilling their five-point demands, including bringing those responsible for yesterday's attack under trial, RU pro-VC Prof Sultan-ul-Islam told The Daily Star.
The vice-chancellor with the help of another group of students reached his residence around 2:15pm, said Prof Prodip Kumar Pandey, administrator of RU Public Relations Office.
Prof Sultan-ul-Islam said the university authority has filed a case with Motihar Police Station in connection with yesterday's incident.
They have already taken necessary steps to prevent outsiders from entering the university, the pro-VC added.
The other demands of students include ensuring the safety of the students and proper treatment of the injured students.
Earlier, around 10:00am, a group of students locked the main gate of the administrative building and then staged a sit-in in front of the VC's residence protesting the violence.
Later, they confined the VC on Senate building premises around 12:00pm.
Early in the morning, when this reporter visited the premises of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), he saw many injured students and their attendants.
However, a press release said the university administration will bear all expenses of the treatment of injured students.
The university authority is working to ensure the safety of the students who are staying in messes in Binodpur and surrounding areas. the authority is in constant contact with the mess owners and police administration, it added.
The university administration strongly condemned the activities of some policemen as several students suffered injuries from rubber bullets.
